Glass formation in Fe-Cr-Zr-B-Mo alloys by tuning Nb addition

Fe-based bulk metallic glasses (BMGs) with high boron content have potential application as a coating material used in the framework for storing spent nuclear fuels to support their safe long-term disposal. The glass forming ability (GFA) and large supercooled liquid region are therefore required such BMGs either glassy powder fabrication or subsequent spraying. In order meet these requirements, influence of Nb on GFA Fe57Cr10Zr8B18Mo7?xNbx (x=1–5, at.%) alloys was investigated, has positive roles thermal stability BMGs. results indicate that fully amorphous phase as-cast samples 3 mm diameter is obtained both Fe57Cr10Zr8B18Mo5Nb2 Fe57Cr10Zr8B18Mo4Nb3 alloys. corresponding regions two 78 K 71 K, respectively. mechanism improving analyzed based principle metal solidification, parameters formation properties compression strength Vicker’s hardness 1,950 MPa 1,310 HV, 2,062 1,180 developed B content, good GFA, very can be materials fuels.
